Water Safety Week 2009

Water Safety Week 2009 was conducted from 21-30 September. All Territorians had the opportunity to participate in free events, activities and competitions that were run throughout the week. The focus this year was supervision, obeying all safety signs, wearing a PFD (personal flotation device) when out in your boat or other watercraft and recognising dangerous marine creatures.

Boof the Barra, the water safety mascot and his water safety buddies visited students at a range of schools and sung the “Be water safety wise” jingle with them. Other exciting events included the branch’s annual Splashfest event which was held at the Darwin Waterfront Precinct, shopping centre displays, come and try days and active family fun days. The Splashfest event was a huge success and lots of people participated in the Water Safety Creek activity to learn more about being safe in and around the water.

A range of competitions were run throughout the week including an under 5’s and over 5’s colouring-in competition, an online Safe Boating Quiz and a chance to perform live at the Splashfest as one of Boof’s back-up dancers. Congratulations goes to:

Poppi Davis – Winner under 5’s colouring-in competition
Jaycee Holt – Winner over 5’s colouring-in competition
Glenn Novelly – Winner Online Safe Boating Quiz
Chantelle, Courtney and Chenoa Weippert, Jessica Roach and Mikele Manser – Winners Boof’s Back-up Dancer Competition
Reanna Walker – Winner Water Safety Creek Activity

The Water Safety Branch thanks everyone who got involved throughout the week with special thanks to our sponsors who help in making it be so successful. We look forward to seeing you all next year during Water Safety Week 2010!
