Water Safety Advisory Council

The Northern Territory Water Safety Advisory Council (NTWSAC) was established in 2002 to:

  • provide advice to the Minister for Local Government on water safety related matters
  • identify gaps in existing provisions of water safety initiatives in relation to the services necessary for the prevention of drowning and near drowning in the Northern Territory
  • co-ordinate, develop and implement a Northern Territory Water Safety Plan that focuses on water safety education, research and data collection and standards.

The challenge for the Council is to maintain the Northern Territory’s under five years of age record, as well as implement strategies to combat drownings amongst older Territorians, particularly men.

The NTWSAC is a ministerially appointed body that provides advice to the Minister for Local Government regarding important and emerging water safety issues.  Members volunteer to be appointed and membership is sought from government departments, organisations and individuals with an interest or expertise in water safety.
