Water Safety

Don't play in pipes and drains

Pipes and drains are very unpredictable, especially during the wet season. Rainfall can cause pipes and drains to flood as heavy rain fills them without warning.

Playing in storm water pipes and drains is dangerous at any time of the year and there is a high risk of serious injury or drowning. It is important to educate your children about the dangers of swimming in pipes and drains.

A community awareness campaign, with advertisements tailored to both wet and dry seasons, has been launched to help young Territorians understand these dangers. The key message "Use your brain, don't play in pipes and drains" is delivered by rapping frogs and aimed at children aged 7 to 15 years.

The Pipes and Drains campaign is an initiative of the Northern Territory Water Safety Advisory Council, in conjunction with the Northern Territory Government, Darwin City Council and the City of Palmerston.

Lesson plans are also available online for teachers.
