| When the barramundi feeds on the waters surface during the day or night it's feeding is characterised by the "boof" noise. This is caused by the barramundi sucking it's prey into it's cavernous mouth with such force that it not only swallows the prey, but also an amount of air and water - hence the exhaling of water and air by the barramundi which creates the "boof" noise. The barramundi achieves this unique feeding behaviour by approaching the prey and flaring its gills in such a way it causes water and air to flow through the mouth at an amazing speed. The excess water and air is then expelled through the gills while the prey is swallowed whole. The bigger the barramundi the louder the "boof" noise. |
