Mrs Daphne Read AO

Current: Chairperson of the NTWSAC.

1958 – 1990: Education – Teacher, Principal & Superintendent.
1991 – 1996: CEO Royal Life Saving Society Australia.
Executive Board Member of International Life Saving.
President Development Aid Commission (ILS).

Volunteer Life Saving – Instructor, Examiner, Referee & Austswim Instructor.

Shaan Myall
Water Safety Branch

Shaan grew up in the Northern Territory and completed high school at Kormilda College. Since leaving school Shaan has completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (recreation Planning and Management) at the University of South Australia and has been working in the sport and recreation field ever since. She has worked at the Office of Sport and Recreation (NT) as a Junior Sport Consultant and previously in South Australia on various junior sport programs.

Shaan thrives on the challenges of finding creative and innovative ways of educating the community on important issues such as water safety. Shaan intends to complete her Certificate IV in Fitness later this year.


KidsafeNT
Saskia Strange
Executive Officer

Kidsafe NT is a part of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia, a national organisation. It has been committed to the reduction of child accidents in the NT since opening its doors in 1983.

Kidsafe is driven by research which points to the top 10 accidents suffered by children. It shows drowning is nearly the highest cause of accidental death in the under 14 age group.

Ms Vicki O’Halloran

Vicki and husband Craig have lived in the Territory for 13 years. Vicki has an Early Childhood Education Degree and Diploma in Business. She has worked in many positions, primarily in the welfare sector at Management and CEO level.

Over the past 3 years she has chaired ACROD here in the Northern Territory, the peak body for people with disabilities. In 1998 she was awarded the Telstra Northern Territory Business Woman of the Year. Vicki is currently the Executive Director of Somerville Community Services Inc and an active advocate for disadvantaged people.


Surf Life Saving NT
Tony Snelling
Cheif Executive officer


Tony Snelling is the Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving Northern Territory (SLSNT) and represents over 1,100 members affiliated with the Darwin, Gove Peninsula and Mindil Beach Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Originally from the Bunbury, Western Australia, Tony and his wife Julie, the SLSNT Lifesaving Academy Manager, made Darwin their home in April 2007. Tony has been an active surf life saver for over 42 years.

In 2007, during the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, Tony was named 'Surf Lifesaver of the Year'. This prestigious award recognises the achievements and contributions of one outstanding individual from over 40,000 active Australian lifesavers.

Other recent achievements include helping SLSNT to establish an office and a professional training facility in Aralia Street, Nightcliff, developing a 24/7 Search & Rescue team of elite lifesavers using Inflatable Rescue Boats and Rescue Jetskis and providing assistance to the Northern Territory Government on aquatic safety signage and risk management of the Wave Pool.

Tony's continual motivation is in providing "…a safe beach and aquatic environment throughout the Northern Territory".

Annette Roberts
Executive Director

Annette Roberts, affectionately known as Floss, is the Executive Director of Royal Life Saving Northern Territory. Floss loves the Territory lifestyle and has lived and worked in rural and remote locations across the Territory with her husband and three sons.
RLSSA is dedicated to turning everyday people into everyday community lifesavers. This is achieved through education, training, advocacy, health promotion, risk management, research, sport and participation.
Everyone can be a lifesaver and Royal Life has been doing this for over 100 years.

Mrs Maria Marriner
Manager
Health Promoting Schools Unit

Maria Marriner is the Manager, Health Promoting Schools with DEET. Maria was formally the Project Officer and key Professional Development facilitator of the MindMatters (Mental Health Promotion) program in the NT (2002-2005).

Maria has undertaken her Doctoral Thesis on the ‘Effectiveness of MindMatters Professional Development in the Northern Territory – a retrospective study’, and is due to graduate in October 2005. Maria holds a Masters in Education, Grad Cert in Health Science, Batchelor of Education, Diploma of Physical Education and has commenced a Batchelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology).

Mr Sri Srinivas
Marine Safety Branch


Sri Srinivas joined the NT Government as Marine Surveyor in 1991 and currently heads the Marine Safety Branch as the Principal Marine Surveyor.

Sri is responsible for the survey and certification of vessels and operators, accident investigations, formulation of guidance notes for use by the public and industry etc. He also represents the NT on the National Marine Safety Committee which looks after formulation of Uniform National Marine Safety Standards. He is a professional Naval Architect and Mechanical Engineer CP Engineer (Mechanical) MIE (Australia), MRINA (UK) and MSNAME (USA).

Sri holds statutory positions as Shipping Inspector, Boating Inspector and Surveyor and Examiner.

He has more than 29 years experience in design, construction and repairs of both naval and commercial boats.

Mr Bob Elix
Darwin City Council Alderman

Bob Elix is a Local Government representative in the Council; he is also an elected member of the Darwin City Council and has been playing an active role in the community since 1963.

Mr David West
Regional Manager, Parks North

David has a long association with Parks and Wildlife over the past 21 years having worked in the Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs regions.

David is currently the Regional Manager for Parks and Wildlife Northern and his responsibilities include the management of several popular swimming areas such as Berry Springs & Howard Springs Nature Parks, Leanyer Recreation Park and Litchfield National Park.


Amateur Fisherman’s Association of the
NT (AFANT)

Mr Chris Makepeace


Currently Executive Officer of the Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the NT Inc. and a member of the Board of Recfish Australia — the national peak body for recreational fishing.

Has had a varied career in public administration, education and communications having held positions such as Deputy Secretary of the NT Department of Education and Editor of NAFA (National Australia Fishing Annual) Publications.

Actively involved in recreational fishing in Australia since 1974. Extensive experience in the development of recreational fishing in the Northern Territory with involvement in Darwin Game Fishing Club, the NT branch of the Game Fishing Association of Australia, the NT Barra Classic fishing tournament, the NT Amateur Fishermen’s Consultative Committee, the NT Barramundi Fishery Advisory Committee and the NT Ministerial Advisory Committee on Recreational Fishing.

Recent experience working in the national fishing media as a writer and magazine editor.
